Ride for Roswell
Ride for Roswell connects us all in making a difference and finding a cure for cancer, says Oncotarget’s Mikhail Blagosklonny

“Four wheels to move the body and two wheels to move the soul.” It’s a favorite refrain of cyclists and it’s never on better display than during huge charity runs and rides. The Ride for Roswell, held annually since 1996 in Buffalo, New York, has provided a way to support cancer research and Oncotarget has been a huge supporter. Mikhail Blagosklonny of Oncotarget says this oncology-oriented peer-reviewed research journal, which is published weekly, is a perfect fit for this fundraising event that welcomes bicyclists of all skill levels. Misha Blagosklonny says that for this reason Oncotarget has helped sponsor the annual bicycle ride for the past two years ( 2018 and 2019) and is planning to participate in the Ride for Roswell 2020.
The story behind The Ride for Roswell and the mission that’s at the heart of the event is what resonated with Oncotarget. Now, having been involved for two years, it’s a partnership that all involved hope will continue. According to the event’s official website, the first ride in 1996 was organized in the memory of 4-year-old Katherine Gioia who died as a result of cancer. Ride founder Mitch Flynn was so touched by his chance encounter that he would soon organize the first ride in conjunction with the Roswell Park Alliance. The current objective of the ride is to “raise the necessary funds to build innovative cancer research programs, as well as services that enhance the quality of a patient’s life.” Over the past two-plus decades, 7,942 riders have helped raise more than $5.5 million that has helped drive cancer research. The event has become one of the largest single-day charity rides in the country and offers 11 routes over some 400 miles.
Mikhail Blagosklonny also says that Oncotarget is one of the multiple sponsors of this event organized by the Roswell Park Cancer Center. As the nation’s first cancer center that was founded in 1898, Roswell Park provides a full range of medical specialists to ensure that treatment plans and therapies are appropriate for each patient. As The Ride for Roswell continues to gain support and sponsors, facilities like the Roswell Park Cancer Center will continue to receive much-needed funds to carry out life-saving work. As part of the 2018 and 2019 events that raised more than $5 million each year, Oncotarget sponsored Sergei Kurenov’s team “Open Access”. Misha Blagosklonny says that Sergei works for Roswell Park as the director of surgical simulation in the department of surgical oncology, and his research interests include use of surgical software that allows surgeons to simulate different operating scenarios and therefore create better surgical intervention plans. Oncotarget chose to sponsor Mr. Kurenov because his research is important for cancer patients and he also shares a commitment to the free exchange of the ideas and open access to the research that Oncotarget promotes as an open-access journal. The software he develops is open-source, which allows other scientists to build better programs and ultimately help more people.
“Like in software development, in cancer research, the open-access journals play a tremendous role in the fight against cancer, because they provide fast, reliable, and free scientific information,” Mr. Kurenov wrote on his fundraising web page.
The 2020 Ride for Roswell is currently scheduled for June 27. Mikhail Blagosklonny says that Oncotarget will continue to participate in this event. Although Oncotarget is published primarily with bio-medical professionals in mind, having a presence at public events like the charity bike ride is a way of spreading awareness. It shows attendees that the background of those trying to cure cancer is varied and the approach must be multi-faceted. Misha Blagosklonny of Oncotarget says this means those doing the research have a place to publish their work and those looking to learn about innovative approaches have a journal to turn to.

When people speak of contemporary medicine, accuracy plays one of the most crucial roles and human lives are literally dependent on it. Likewise, any researches pertaining to medicine are required to meet the top standards. The issue today is that any conclusions of researches can be posted online and used as a reference without being thoroughly checked and validated. Mikhail (Misha) Blagosklonny of Oncotarget perfectly understood this challenge and tried to develop an alternative solution. That’s how a weekly oncology-focused research journal named “Oncotarget” has been founded back in 2010. The key principle of this journal is related to Altmetric scores that are used as a quality indicator. That allows both readers and authors to verify publications with Altmetric Article Reports that provide “real-time feedback containing data summary related to a particular publication.” Oncotarget website demonstrates a complete publications list with respective scores above 100 as well as reports mentioned above. Mikhail (Misha) Blagosklonny proud to share his new approach and hopes it provides the required help to anyone, who has interest in oncology.Misha Blagosklonny
“A diagnostic autoantibody signature for primary cutaneous melanoma” has the Altmetric score of 594. This article was published back in 2018 by Oncotarget and completed by various experts from Hollywood Private Hospital, Edith Cowan University, Dermatology Specialist Group, St. John of God Hospital and The University of Western Australia. The introduction of the study mentions that “recent data shows that Australians are four times more likely to develop a cancer of the skin than any other type of cancer”, and shares an insight on melanoma that “is curable by surgical excision in the majority of cases, if detected at an early stage.”
The publication has got an Altmetric score of 594. Mikhail (Misha) Blagosklonny realizes that majority of readers are aiming to understand the very meaning of it. Based on the Altmetric website, the score relates to “how many people have been exposed to and engaged with a scholarly output.” Hence, the publication about melanoma, was used for citations in different news articles 69 times. In addition, it was referred to in 2 online blogs, as well as 25 Tweets on Twitter and 1 Facebook post. FOX23 of Tulsa, Oklahoma has headlined their news on July 20, 2018 as “New blood test could detect skin cancer early”, using the main content of Australia study
Another Oncotarget’s research with a top score of 476, is “Biomarkers for early diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma: Do we need another moon-shot,”. This study has appeared in 60 news stories, 1 online blog post and 6 Twitter posts. The majority of public may have seen a brief overview only, however those who visit Mikhail (Misha) Blagosklonny at Oncotarget, do get useful scientific facts. Oncotarget is happy to have the chance to share with online readers this highly appreciated and high-quality information, that is trustworthy and reliable.
